It has been reported that more than 500,000 chinstrap penguins have died on Zavodovski Island, near Antarctica, since 2011, causing the loss of over a quarter of the island's population.

Research Findings

In a statement made by the British Antarctic Survey, it was reported that field and aerial surveys were conducted on the penguin population on Zavodovski Island.

As a result of the observations, it was clearly determined that more than 500,000 chinstrap penguins on the island have died since 2011.

Massive Loss in the Colony

Scientific analyses determined that these losses correspond to more than a quarter of the total penguin population on the island.

With these developments, Zavodovski Island has fallen back to become the region where the chinstrap penguin population is declining the fastest in the world.

Loss of Status and Causes

As a result of this population decline, the island also lost its title of being home to the world's largest penguin colony.

Researchers emphasized that climate-driven changes in the Southern Ocean region directly and negatively affect the penguins' food sources.
