Project developed at Karabük University enables computer control via brain signals

Thanks to a new TÜBİTAK-supported project developed at Karabük University, computers and various systems can now be controlled using brain signals. The study aims to make life easier for muscular dystrophy patients.
Development Process of the Project
A TÜBİTAK-supported project was developed in the Biomedical Engineering Department of Karabük University to enable the control of computers and computerized systems using brain signals. Work on the project, led by Assistant Professor Abdullah Bilal Aygün, began last year.
SSVEP Method and Operating Principle
The project, titled Innovative and Adaptable Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential Design and Application, focused on SSVEP signals, which are among the important methods of brain-computer interfaces. The electrical activity generated in the cortex when a person focuses on a visual stimulus at a specific frequency is detected.
Conveniences It Will Provide for Patients
The project aims to enable ALS patients and individuals who cannot use their striated muscles to control a wheelchair directly through brain signals. It is also targeted at allowing patients to type letter by letter on a computer screen or convey requests such as water and medication without the need for an assistant.
Low Cost and Testing Phase
The project designed portable hardware costing 50 dollars instead of 200 to 300 dollars. It was noted that the system was tested on 10 volunteers and that the data obtained was analyzed and submitted to an academic journal within the Q1 scope to be contributed to the literature.
