South Korea plans to develop $3.5 billion frontier AI model starting next year

South Korea has announced a massive artificial intelligence project worth 4.7 trillion won, or approximately $3.5 billion, set to launch in March 2027 to take the lead in the global AI race.

Project Details

The South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT announced that a comprehensive budget and strategy are planned to develop one of the nation's most advanced artificial intelligence models.

Bidding Process

Following the parliament's approval of the budget in December, the ministry aims to determine the project leader through a competitive bidding process.

Funding and Resources

In the project, which will combine public capital investment with private sector funds, computing chips, data, and talent pools will be gathered in a single hub.

Participation Conditions

Individual companies or consortia will be able to participate in the project, which will allow start-ups, enterprises, universities, and researchers to play leading roles.
