AI experts known from tech giants such as Genentech, Meta, AWS, Spotify, and Facebook have launched a new healthcare AI laboratory called Ortet to develop individual-centric foundational models, securing $500 million in investment.

Founding and Funding of Ortet

AI leaders hailing from pioneering companies like Genentech, Amazon Web Services, Spotify, and Facebook have joined forces to announce the launch of a new startup laboratory named Ortet.

The venture aims to accelerate investments in research, infrastructure, and talent by securing a massive $500 million funding support from investment firm Thoreau.

Individual-Centric Artificial Intelligence Model

Moving beyond narrow tools focused on a single task, Ortet aims to create a shared intelligence layer that combines patients' biological, clinical, operational, and financial processes.

This comprehensive foundational model to be developed will be able to continuously evolve by learning multidimensionally from treatments, outcomes, and system interactions throughout a patient's health journey.

Founding Partners and Experienced Team

Among the company's co-founders is Kyunghyun Cho, who co-developed the attention mechanism and the Gated Recurrent Unit system, which are foundational building blocks of modern AI.

Alongside Kyunghyun Cho, well-known industry names such as Keunwoo Choi, Henri Dwyer, Elman Mansimov, Jeff Hammerbacher, and Claudia Shi also assume senior roles on the founding team.

Infrastructure and Ecosystem Partnerships

Having secured its first GPU cluster, Ortet is rapidly building the technical foundations necessary to scale research into production.

Among the founding partnerships of the Thoreau investment platform are key components of the healthcare ecosystem such as Ensemble Health Partners and Penelope Health.
