Three-Dimensional Cellular Atlas of Rice from Germination to Flowering Created
Scientists in China have developed a comprehensive three-dimensional atlas examining all developmental stages of rice on a cell-by-cell basis.
As a result of comprehensive research conducted in China, a three-dimensional atlas has been created showing all developmental steps of rice—from the moment of germination to flowering and grain-filling processes—on a cellular basis.
Global Scope of the Research
Published in the internationally prestigious journal Cell, the research was completed under the leadership of the Yazhou Bay National Laboratory in Sanya, Hainan province, with the participation of numerous institutions.
Advanced Techniques Used
To examine the developmental processes of rice in great detail, scientists combined genome sequencing, single-cell sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics technologies.
Contribution to Precise Breeding Processes
The findings are expected to significantly accelerate precise breeding processes, enabling faster and more effective access to high-yielding crops.
Open-Access Database
Within the framework of the project, an open-access database that all experts worldwide can freely utilize, along with a rice-specific single-cell foundational model, has been made available to researchers.
Disadvantages of Traditional Methods
When applying traditional methods, modifying a single genetic trait of rice could lead to undesirable, negative consequences in other structures of the plant.
Targeted Interventions and Expert Opinion
While the newly developed atlas and modeling system provide researchers with the opportunity to make goal-oriented interventions, Li Guoxiang, a researcher at the Rural Development Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, emphasized the importance of the independent seed sector.
