Turkey's Geographic Information Systems Board meets at the Presidential Complex
Meeting to ensure the effective use of public resources and prevent duplicate data production, the board discussed the role of geographic data in decision support mechanisms.
Turkey's Geographic Information Systems Board convened at the Presidential Complex under the chairmanship of Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz. The meeting addressed developments in geographic information systems, the integration of local administrations into the system, and the efficient use of water resources.
Local Administrations Included in the National Ecosystem
While data from central government institutions are brought together under common standards on the National Geographic Information Platform, local administrations are also being included in this ecosystem in the new period. Metropolitan, provincial, and district municipalities, as well as water and sewerage administrations, are joining the national structure.
Geographic data provided by municipalities and administrations have been standardized, and Geographic Data Sharing Matrices have been created for 147 geographic data items.
Data Quality and Prevention of Duplicate Production
The initiative aims to guarantee the quality, up-to-date status, and service continuity of geographic data on the platform. The objective is to prevent duplicate data production and use public resources more effectively.
Thanks to the integrated structure, geographic data is intended to be transformed from merely produced information into an effective decision-support tool.
Coordination in Investment and Expropriation Processes
Geographic information systems make it possible to determine which data layers intersect with the area designated at the initial stage of an investment and which institutions are responsible.
By conducting inter-institutional consultations earlier and in a more coordinated manner, it is planned to timely determine the option that ensures overriding public interest and to utilize this coordination in expropriation processes.
Technology, Navigation, and Blue Homeland Projects
Through the Ministry of Industry and Technology, innovative projects by entrepreneurs that combine geographic data with technology are supported. With the National Navigation Application Development project, an ecosystem with high export potential is targeted.
The geographic data infrastructure of the Blue Homeland is being strengthened through the Establishment of the National Marine Geographic Data Center project by the Ministry of National Defense Naval Forces Command.
National Water Plan and Smart Water Management
With the 2026-2035 National Water Plan, Turkey's water management targets and priorities for the next 10-year period have been established. Through the Smart Water Management System, water resources will be monitored in real time.
It is planned to establish a robust decision-support structure that anticipates risks by having relevant institutions share the necessary geographic data for the National Water Information System.
