Vietnam Sets 2026 Target for Strategic Technology Products
Vietnam aims to complete strategic technology products for national security and socio-economic development by the end of 2026.
At a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung, the Task Force for Science, Technology, Innovation, and Strategic Technology Development announced that efforts will be resolutely pursued to develop strategic technology products serving national security and socio-economic development by the end of 2026.
Purpose of the Meeting and Determination
Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung chaired a thematic meeting to evaluate the progress in implementing national strategic technology development tasks. The meeting emphasized the highest political determination to develop products that directly serve socio-economic development goals and ensure national security and defense by the end of 2026.
Legal Framework and Project Proposals
According to a report presented by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the legal framework and procedures regarding the implementation of strategic technology tasks were largely completed as of August 2026. While 28 project proposals from eight ministries and agencies were included in the standardization process, the total estimated investment amount is stated to be over 5,300 billion VND.
Current Limitations and Expectations
While limitations during the policy transition period were acknowledged at the meeting, it was stated that the quality of proposals was uneven and only 11 out of 20 major identified problems were addressed. Higher-quality proposals are expected in critical areas such as 5G/6G, autonomous AI infrastructure, and personalized healthcare.
Contributions of Local Authorities
In addition to central agencies, 85 strategic technology ideas and solutions were submitted by 15 provinces and cities. Focusing on areas such as UAVs, artificial intelligence, digital twins, blockchain, and genetic technology, these local proposals are being categorized into three groups and guided by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Upcoming Calendar and Goals
Clear deadlines have been established for the upcoming period, with plans to approve nine eligible task dossiers before August 31, 2026. Additionally, this number is projected to increase in early September 2026, and ministries and local authorities are expected to finalize plans for the remaining technological challenges.
