Turkey Ranks First in Daily Cigarette Use According to OECD Report
A published international health report revealed that daily cigarette consumption rates in Turkey are well above international averages.
According to the Health at a Glance 2025 report released by the OECD, Turkey ranks at the top among member countries with a daily cigarette use rate of 28.3% among the population aged 15 and over.
Daily Cigarette Rates in the OECD Report
According to the OECD's Health at a Glance 2025 report, 28.3% of the population aged 15 and over in Turkey smokes daily. The average for OECD countries stands at 14.8%.
In line with these data, Turkey ranks first among OECD countries with the highest daily cigarette use rate. Turkey is followed by Hungary and Greece.
Comparison with International Averages
While the daily smoking rate among the population aged 15 and over in OECD countries averages 14.8%, the rate in Turkey approaches nearly twice this average.
The report emphasizes that while smoking has decreased in the majority of member countries over the last 10 years, tobacco use remains a major public health issue.
Daily Average Consumption Amounts
Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya stated that the daily average consumption of smokers in Turkey is at the level of 17.1 cigarettes.
According to the comparative data shared, an average of 15.7 cigarettes are consumed daily in Greece, 15.5 in Israel, and 15.4 in Japan and Austria.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use by Gender
Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya drew attention to the distribution of cigarette use by gender in Turkey and shared significant rates.
According to the evaluations made, approximately one in every two men and about one in every four women over the age of 18 use cigarettes.
Physical Activity and Obesity Rates
According to the report, 44% of adults in Turkey do not engage in sufficient physical activity, while the OECD average remains at 30%.
While the rate of adults reporting themselves as obese in Turkey was measured at 20%, the average across the OECD was announced as 19%.
