The Norwegian Nobel Committee presented the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem Navi Pillay for her efforts in promoting peace and international law.

Reason for the Award

In the announcement made in Oslo, it was stated that Pillay, a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, played a major role in ensuring the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Committee Chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes stated that the international legal system is under great pressure and its institutions are under attack.

Pillay's Reaction and Historical Career

Making a statement after winning the award, 85-year-old Pillay said she dedicated the prize to everyone who has survived international crimes. Pillay became the first woman to open a law office in Natal in 1967 and undertook the defense of Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists.

International Reactions and Award Ceremony

World leaders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, reacted to the decision, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry criticized the award. The prize, worth 12 million Swedish crowns, will be presented in Oslo on December 10.
