Child Eye Health and the Impact of Sugary Drinks on Cancer Risk
While experts highlight early eye examinations and screen time awareness, new research reveals a link between sugary beverages and the risk of stomach cancer.
Op. Dr. Serap Eroğlu from Sivas Numune Hospital emphasized that early eye examinations in children are critical for visual development, while a new study found a strong link between daily sugary drink consumption and the risk of stomach cancer.
The Importance of Early Eye Examinations in Children
Sivas Numune Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Serap Eroğlu stated that eye examinations performed at an early age in children are of great importance for healthy visual development.
Eye Health and Risk Factors in Adults
For adults, it was reported that regular eye check-ups should be conducted by taking into account various risk factors such as age, diabetes, hypertension, and a family history of eye disease.
Screen Use and Outdoor Impact
Warning against the negative effects of prolonged screen use on eye health, Eroğlu recommended taking regular breaks in front of screens, maintaining an appropriate viewing distance, and increasing the time children spend outdoors.
Sugary Drinks and Stomach Cancer Research
A comprehensive study published in the journal Gastro Hep Advances, covering data from 112,284 individuals between 1986 and 2022, examined the relationship between sugary drink consumption and stomach cancer.
The findings revealed that individuals who consumed at least one serving—approximately 237 milliliters—of sugary drinks per day had a 2.45 times higher risk of developing stomach cancer.
Observational Nature of the Research
The researchers specifically emphasized that this study does not definitively prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, and that the data obtained are entirely observational in nature.
