A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced that the country has nominated senior health official Song Li for the leadership of the World Health Organization, with the goal of expanding its presence in international governing bodies.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Dr. Song Li's nomination demonstrates the country's support for multilateralism and the World Health Organization.

Song Li's Background and Areas of Expertise

Song Li is recognized as a senior public health official who has taken on active roles in crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and SARS.

According to her official biography, her areas of expertise include maternal and child health policies and international cooperation.

Election Process and Schedule

The World Health Assembly will elect a new president in May, as the second five-year term of current Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is ending and rules prevent him from running again.

There are also officially announced candidates from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Spain, Indonesia, and Botswana.

The World Health Organization executive board will narrow the list of candidates down to three for member states to evaluate at the end of January and early February.
