Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced on Thursday that her country has nominated Song Li for this critical position.
Mao Ning stated that this move demonstrates China's support for multilateralism and the World Health Organization.
Song Li's Background and Areas of Expertise
As a senior public health official, Song Li has played active roles in major global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and SARS.
According to her official biography, Song's areas of expertise include maternal and child health policies and international cooperation.
Election Process and Other Candidates
Current Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is completing his second five-year term and is not eligible to run again under the rules.
The electoral general assembly that will determine the new head of the World Health Organization will be held next May.
