According to diplomatic sources, China plans to field a late candidate in the race to increase its influence in the space left vacant after the United States withdrew from the World Health Organization.

New Candidate for Global Health Leadership

According to information provided by diplomats and a source close to the matter, China is preparing to nominate a late candidate for the leadership of the World Health Organization.

With this move, the Beijing administration aims to expand its influence in the international arena and within the United Nations following the US departure from the organization.

Prominent Figure Song Li

It was stated that the person China plans to nominate to replace current Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is Song Li.

Song Li is known as a senior public health official with two decades of experience in maternal and child health policies and international cooperation.

US Withdrawal and Structural Change in the Organization

The withdrawal of the United States from the organization as its largest donor forced the United Nations health agency into a comprehensive restructuring.

Due to the loss of funding, the organization had to scale back its operations, cut top management roles, and eliminate thousands of positions.

Candidacy Process and Clarified Schedule

The World Health Organization will share the full list of candidates with the public following regional committee meetings expected to be held in early November.

So far, six candidates representing Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Qatar, Botswana, Indonesia, and Spain have revealed their identities on the official website.
