Poland begins ordering long-lead components for first AP1000

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe has commissioned Westinghouse to order critical components requiring long lead times for the first unit of the country's planned nuclear power plant.

Procurement Process for Critical Components

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe has instructed Westinghouse to order components requiring long-term supply for the first unit of the country's first nuclear power plant.

Importance of Long-Lead Components

Components requiring long-term production, such as heavy forged and cast parts, reactor pressure vessels, and steam turbines, are ordered years before installation.

Early ordering steps in the supply chain are of great importance because a limited number of heavy engineering facilities are capable of producing these specialized parts.

Scope of the First Unit

The procurement scope includes six core components, including the reactor containment vessel for the nuclear island and related structural modules.

Engineering Development Agreement

The procurement process for critical components was initiated within the framework of the existing Engineering Development Agreement between PEJ and the Westinghouse-Bechtel Consortium.

Investment Schedule and Targets

The Polish government selected Westinghouse AP1000 reactor technology in November 2022 for the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in the Pomeranian region.

The first concrete for the initial unit is planned to be poured in the final quarter of 2028, with the reactors scheduled to enter commercial operation between 2036 and 2038.
