As a result of the devastating floods and landslides affecting the border between Nepal and China, the total death toll has risen to at least 676, while nearly 3,000 people remain unaccounted for.
Rising Death and Missing Toll in the Region
According to updated data from authorities, the total death toll in Nepal and Tibet has reached 676 people, with approximately 3,000 people listed as missing.
While Chinese authorities reported that 7 people lost their lives and more than 550 people are missing in the region, Nepal's disaster agency announced that the death toll has risen to 669 with 2,426 people missing.
Cause of the Disaster and Weather Conditions
Experts state that the disaster, which occurred on Wednesday in Nepal and China's Tibet region, was triggered by a large mass of ice breaking off from a glacier and falling into the river.
Search and rescue efforts in the region are proving extremely difficult due to damaged roads, disrupted communication lines, and foggy and rainy weather expected to persist throughout the weekend.
International Support and Those Trapped in the Tunnel
While Nepal has not requested personnel from foreign countries for general search and rescue operations, it has asked China for tunnel experts for people trapped inside a mud-filled hydroelectric power plant tunnel.
China dispatched expert teams by helicopter from Tibet, and Nepali Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal confirmed that technical assistance requests have been communicated.
Property Damage and Reconstruction Cost
Following the massive disaster, a significant financial resource is needed to rebuild the country's infrastructure.
Nepali Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle estimates that the country will need over $4 billion in funds for reconstruction efforts after this major disaster.
