Disaster in Nepal's Rasuwa District: Glacier Collapse Triggers Floods
Severe floods caused by a glacier collapse in Nepal's Rasuwa district have led to massive devastation and hundreds of deaths.
Massive devastation occurred on Wednesday in Nepal's Rasuwa district near the Tibet border, affecting the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers after a glacier collapsed and triggered flash floods. Hundreds of people have lost their lives in the region, and thousands are reported missing.
Devastation Observed in Rasuwa District
In Rasuwa, where roads and bridges were destroyed and dozens of houses were buried under mud, residential areas and infrastructure were submerged underwater.
More than 500 shops in the region's main market were destroyed or swept away under water, mud, and debris.
Glacier Collapse and Overflowing Rivers
It was determined that the disaster was caused by a glacial outburst that triggered flows of rock, ice, mud, and debris in the Himalayan mountain river systems.
The river, previously a narrow stream, rose excessively due to the floods, and a hydroelectric project in Trishuli was also destroyed.
Search and Rescue Operations and Missing Persons Information
In a statement on Sunday morning, Nepal's disaster agency announced that 734 bodies have been recovered and the total number of missing persons has risen to 2,498.
Rainfall and rising river waters during the night negatively impacted search and rescue efforts in the region.
Foreign Nationals and the Situation in Tibet
While helicopters are supporting search and rescue operations, 589 foreign nationals, mostly Indian citizens, remain missing.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that 16 people lost their lives and 546 are missing in Tibet as well.
