The catamaran-type ferry, which departed from the port of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus and was heading toward the Taşucu port in Mersin, Turkey, capsized approximately two kilometers off the coast.
According to information reported by a local Cyprus newspaper, the vessel began taking on water during the sea journey and completely submerged within a short time.
Search and Rescue Operations and Survivors
Following the news of the disaster, numerous ambulances and search and rescue teams were dispatched to the region.
Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that more than 172 people have been rescued alive so far within the framework of ongoing operations.

Northern Cyprus Minister of Transport Erhan Arıklı stated that the vessel had turned upside down and that teams were actively performing duties at the scene.
