Flamingos Sheltered from Hurricane at Florida Zoo
As Hurricane Isaias approached, ZooWorld staff moved flamingos and other sensitive species to safe areas.
As Hurricane Isaias swept through the region, employees at ZooWorld in Florida took extraordinary measures to protect endangered animals, housing the flamingos in a park restroom.
Hurricane Precautions and Flamingo Shelter
During Hurricane Isaias, which impacted the Gulf Coast, staff and keepers worked to ensure the safety of vulnerable animals.
The flamingos at ZooWorld Panama City Beach were crowded together into one of the park's restrooms until the storm passed.
Social Media Share and Other Animals
Zoo officials shared footage of the birds inside the restroom with their followers on a social media platform.
The published post stated that each animal has a different hurricane procedure, noting that bat-eared foxes were placed in crates with extra bedding.
Past Similarities and Storm Aftermath
It is known that flamingos require ample space and water during severe storms to prevent stress and dehydration.
These images from Florida brought to mind the moments when flamingos at the Miami Metrozoo rode out Hurricane Andrew in a bathroom in the past.
