Hotel Groups Target Syria for Tourism as It Rebuilds From Rubble of Civil War

Global and regional hotel groups aim to enter or expand their presence in the Syrian market, anticipating that the country's rich history and coastal regions will attract foreign tourists.

Hotel Chains' Syria Initiative

Western-based hotel groups such as Accor, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, and Minor Hotels are conducting project negotiations and location research in Damascus and coastal regions.

Signs of Recovery in Tourism Sector

As the devastating civil war in Syria ended about two years ago, international flights and tourists have begun to return. According to official data, the number of tourists more than doubled in the first half of 2026, reaching 3.52 million.

Investments and Regional Agreements

UAE-based real estate developer Eagle Hills has signed an economic agreement and framework agreement with the Syrian government for multi-billion-dollar projects in Damascus and Latakia. Other developers, such as Arada and Emaar, are also closely monitoring projects in the country.

Challenges and Security Situation

While major challenges remain in drawing tourists back, the country still experiences periodic episodes of violence. Although the US removed Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list in August, the State Department still advises its citizens not to travel there.
