Living Conditions and Economic Crisis Six Months Into the War in Iran

As the sixth month of the war waged by the US and Israel against Iran is left behind, living conditions for the country's 90 million citizens are becoming increasingly difficult due to inflation, the depreciation of the currency, and infrastructure damage.

Life in the Shadow of War and Political Change

While the military and political administration in Iran tries to adapt to wartime conditions without compromising its ideological principles, daily life has turned into a major struggle for the country's population of 90 million.

Despite the death of the-then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hamaney, along with key figures from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and state institutions in the conflicts that began on February 28, the late leader's son Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen as the country's new leader.

Inflation and Record Drop in Currency

According to data released by the Statistical Center of Iran, annual inflation rose by 89 percent in the month of Mordad ending on August 22, while food inflation exceeded 127 percent.

In the Tehran free market, the national currency, the rial, dropped to a historical low level of 2.06 million against the US dollar.

Infrastructure Damage and Approaching Winter Challenges

During the war, oil and natural gas facilities, petrochemical plants, iron and steel and power plants, as well as residences, ports, and airports suffered significant damage.

This devastation has led to an even worse fuel and electricity shortage as the winter season approaches.

Internal Political Pressures and Security Measures

The judiciary and intelligence units have increased control by taking strict measures against any action and speech that does not comply with the official narrative.

It was reported that weekly executions have continued and mandatory hijab laws have been resolutely enforced during this process.
