Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Delays Elections Again
The decree issued by Mahmoud Abbas postponing the elections to September 11, 2027, extends the long-standing period without elections in Palestine.
Palestinian Authority Leader Mahmoud Abbas has once again postponed the planned legislative and presidential elections, setting the new election date for September 11, 2027.
Election Decree and New Date
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas postponed the elections to a later date via a decree issued on Friday, according to the official WAFA agency. With this new regulation, it was decided that the Palestinian Legislative Council and presidential elections will be held on September 11, 2027.
Reasons for Postponement and Debates
Palestinian officials cited the current conditions in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem as the reason for postponing the vote. The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, chaired by Abbas, claimed that Israel prevented election materials and international observers from entering Gaza.
Approaches of Israel and Hamas
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected these claims, accusing Mahmoud Abbas of trying to shift the responsibility for the postponement decision onto another party. Meanwhile, Hamas welcomed the postponement decision, describing the situation as a step in the right direction.
