Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz
The US military launched airstrikes on Sunday against rocket batteries on Larak Island, citing that the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was preparing to launch rockets and naval mines into the waterway. Following this development, a large supertanker sailing south of the Strait of Hormuz struck two naval mines, came to a complete halt, and burst into flames.
Iran's Military Retaliation
According to Iranian state television citing a statement from the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Tehran administration targeted American military bases in Jordan with ballistic missiles in response to the US attacks. While Jordanian authorities announced that eight missiles were intercepted in the air, the United Arab Emirates denied claims that a base on its territory had been successfully targeted.
Economic and Political Dimensions
US President Donald Trump claimed on social media that Iran's energy hub on Kharg Island had been destroyed, but the National Iranian Oil Company strongly denied this allegation. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accelerated efforts to economically isolate Iran within the framework of the G20 meetings.
