Why the Trade Negotiations Collapsed
In a radio interview, US President Donald Trump stated that trade talks with Canada had failed and that they had a very good deal on the table. Trump noted that they could source everything they needed from elsewhere if necessary.
50 Percent Additional Tariffs
Following the collapse of the negotiations, the US administration imposed new customs duties of 50 percent on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports on Saturday. This decision deeply shook economic relations between the two countries.
Countermove from Canada
Responding to the US move on Tuesday, the Canadian government announced that it was imposing retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of annual US-origin imports. In addition, support packages for businesses and workers were announced.
Tariffs on the Automotive Sector
US President Trump announced that an additional 50 percent tariff would be applied to Canadian automotive products, including medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and that this decision would take effect on January 1.

White House adviser Peter Navarro stated that following the deal rejected by Canada, they would be forced to return to the negotiating table in the future under much worse conditions, and that the previously offered terms would never be obtained again.
