Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire, Zelensky Says "News For Me"

US President Donald Trump announced that an energy ceasefire has been reached between Russia and Ukraine, effective immediately. Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy stated that this development was new to him, but expressed readiness to support it provided Moscow complies.

Announcement of the Ceasefire and Initial Reactions

In a statement made via the Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump announced that an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine had gone into effect immediately. Claiming that the parties had accepted this agreement, Trump did not share any information regarding the timeline and implementation details of the process.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that this announcement came as a surprise to him and that he was hearing the news for the first time. However, he stated that if Russia also complies and accepts the ceasefire, Ukraine is ready to support it, provided that the details are conveyed by the American side.

Continuation of Attacks

Just hours after the ceasefire announcement, Zelenskyy reported that Russia targeted a power plant in the capital Kyiv with a drone. Subsequently, it was reported that attacks were also carried out against energy facilities in the Kharkiv region.

Controversial Diesel Agreement and Reactions

The declaration of the energy ceasefire coincided with a controversial diesel agreement between the US and Russia aimed at lowering fuel prices. This step, which envisions temporarily lifting sanctions on Russian diesel, drew criticism both from the Kyiv administration and international circles.

The Ukrainian leader described this agreement as a gift given to Vladimir Putin. US senators and European officials also expressed that bypassing laws banning Russian energy imports carries risks.
