US Pledges Tens of Millions to UN Bodies in Geneva, Sources Say

The United States has reportedly made commitments amounting to tens of millions of dollars to United Nations organizations operating in Geneva. Diplomats stated that this move demonstrates Washington's desire to maintain engagement with the global body it has criticized.

Commitment Letters Sent

According to two diplomats and a UN source, the United States has sent commitment letters to several UN organizations based in Geneva, including the World Meteorological Organization and CITES.

State Department Statement

A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed that a payment has been made to the UN, while declining to provide details on the amounts.

The spokesperson stated that this payment should not be interpreted as satisfaction with the status quo, but rather as recognition of reforms achieved and an expectation for more.

Funding Strategy and Voting Rights

During the Trump administration, UN funding had been cut and some commitments left unpaid. However, Washington has moved to pay off a significant portion of its arrears to maintain its influence and secure its voting rights amid China's growing influence and the upcoming election process for a new secretary-general.

Status of the World Meteorological Organization

The World Meteorological Organization confirmed that it received a payment of 15.1 million Swiss francs covering the U.S. debt for 2024, thereby preserving its voting rights.

Reactions from Other Organizations

While CITES announced that it received a funding commitment on September 24, the International Labour Organization reported that they have not yet received a payment commitment from Washington.
