Trump eases Russia sanctions, says Putin will release diesel amid massive price spikes

To lower diesel prices that have reached record levels globally, the US administration partially eased sanctions against Russia. President Donald Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will ship hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel fuel to the global market.

Easing of Sanctions

The U.S. Department of Treasury temporarily eased sanctions on Russian diesel fuel in order to increase supply in global markets and prevent unprecedented price hikes.

According to published official documents, a temporary general license has been enacted allowing the sale, delivery, and importation of Russian-origin diesel fuel until April 7, 2027.

Statements by Putin and Trump

President Donald Trump stated on social media that Vladimir Putin will immediately release hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel fuel to the global market, and that this move will lower prices.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, stated that he informed Trump they are ready to supply oil and petroleum products to the U.S. and global markets.

Increase in Diesel Prices

Due to the conflicts that began in February and recent severe developments, diesel fuel prices have surged by approximately 70 percent, breaking all-time records back-to-back.

Economists have frequently expressed that these record surges could lead to widespread inflationary effects on the global economy.

Lifting of the Export Ban

Following attacks on Ukraine's energy assets in July, the Kremlin administration had imposed a diesel export ban and extended this ban until the end of October.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told the state agency TASS that, as a result of the agreement, his country will begin lifting the diesel export ban immediately.

Zelenskyy's Reaction

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the U.S. decision to ease diesel sanctions as a clear weakness, arguing that this situation will support Russia's war efforts.

Zelenskyy emphasized that both sides must accept the same conditions for the attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure to stop.

Reflections on the Markets

Following Trump's announcement, diesel futures fell by 4 percent on Friday, but the total increase since the beginning of the year continues to maintain high levels.

Brent crude prices, meanwhile, continued to trade at around 104 dollars with a slight decline on a daily basis.
