World Meteorological Organization Announces El Nino Will Intensify and Continue
The United Nations weather agency has announced that this year's El Nino event will peak in December and last until February 2027.
According to the monthly climate bulletin published by the World Meteorological Organization, the El Nino event effective this year will intensify, reach its peak in December, and is considered almost certain to last until February 2027.
Expected Duration of El Nino
In its monthly climate bulletin, the World Meteorological Organization reported that this year's El Nino event will intensify, peak in December, and continue until February 2027 with near certainty.
One of the Strongest Periods
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that forecasts indicate El Nino could be one of the strongest periods recorded since at least 1950 and will maintain its impact throughout February 2027.
Sea Water Temperature Record
The UN weather body announced that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pasific are expected to rise to 3.7 degrees above normal between October and December, representing a record level.
Previous Records Exceeded
This expected temperature anomaly is well above the previous record level of 2.6 degrees recorded during the November 2015 to January 2016 period.
Climate Cycle and Impacts
While El Nino constitutes the warm phase of the natural climate cycle, it causes global temperatures to rise and disrupts precipitation patterns across vast regions, leading to droughts or severe rains.
