1Password lets AI agents use your passwords without seeing them

1Password has introduced a new feature called "1Password for Agents" that enables users' accounts to be logged into securely by AI agents. Thanks to this system, bots do not gain unlimited access to all accounts, and login credentials are filled in without being shown to the agents upon user approval.

The 1Password for Agents system uses a unique digital key to verify the identity of an AI agent when it reaches a login form. The application then sends a notification to users detailing which account credentials are needed and why. Once the request is approved, 1Password fills in the login details itself rather than handing them directly to the agent. Approvals are given on the user's own device through a process similar to two-factor authentication, and the agent continues its task without ever seeing the password.

Product manager Aashish Tripathi stated that agents are now starting to do real work, and the old model of handing over credentials to users and wishing them luck is no longer viable. The new system is designed to work compatibly with popular AI agents such as Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work, Dots, Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Town. It was reported that work is underway to support platforms such as Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Instinct, Kernel, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo, and Wajo.
