2.9-Kilometer Road Network in the Historical Peninsula Closed to Traffic
In Istanbul's Historical Peninsula, a 2.9-kilometer road network around Cankurtaran and Çatladıkapı has been closed to vehicle traffic and pedestrianized by a UKOME decision.
In Istanbul's Historical Peninsula region, an approximately 2.9-kilometer road network covering the surroundings of Cankurtaran and Çatladıkapı was closed to vehicle traffic and pedestrianized as of October 1, 2026, in line with the UKOME decision.
Implemented in accordance with the unanimous decision taken by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Coordination Center in June 2026, the regulation aims to protect the historical fabric, reduce vehicle density, and transform the region into a pedestrian-first tourism area. Similar practices in tourism centers worldwide, such as Copenhagen, Madrid, Florence, and Ljubljana, contribute to the preservation of historical areas and the revitalization of the local economy.
