The United Nations General Assembly condemned the US economic embargo against Cuba for the 34th time with 130 votes in favor and 17 against, while 25 countries abstained.
The United Nations General Assembly voted on Wednesday for the 34th time on the decision regarding the economic embargo applied by the US against Cuba. As a result of lobbying efforts by the Washington administration, a notable drop in support occurred in the vote, and many countries voted against the resolution or abstained.
The vote resulted in 130-17, while 25 countries abstained. Last year, more than 160 countries had supported the resolution and only 12 countries had abstained. This year, Western countries such as Germany, Italy, and Latvia refrained from voting for the first time in 34 years. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Lithuania, Morocco, North Macedonia, Paraguay, and Slovenia were among the countries that voted against, mostly for the first time. During the sessions, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and US UN Ambassador Mike Waltz exchanged harsh statements.
