7 Key Developments in Global and Domestic Markets Last Week
MSCI's freezing of Turkey index changes, the Fed Beige Book report, IMF growth forecasts, and the Nobel Prize in Economics were on the markets' agenda.
Among the 7 most important headlines of the past week in global and domestic markets were MSCI index decisions, US inflation, the IMF's Turkey growth forecasts, and the winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
MSCI announced that it has temporarily frozen certain index changes regarding Turkish equities until a second notice, stating that a potential downgrade of Turkey's status may be evaluated if sufficient progress is not achieved by June 2027. While the US Federal Reserve's Beige Book Report revealed that price pressures remained strong or increased in half of the 12 Fed districts due to rising energy costs, US CPI recorded its fastest increase in the last five months due to rising fuel costs. The International Energy Agency (IEA) agreed to supply more than 20 million barrels of diesel to the market, in addition to the reserves pledged in March, aiming to increase supply and lower prices.
The IMF announced that the Turkish economy is expected to grow by 2.7 percent this year and 3.6 percent next year. According to Commerzbank's analysis, the pace of nominal depreciation in the Turkish lira is not yet at a level converging to its fair value. On the other hand, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics was won by Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford.
