Accusations Against Netanyahu Regarding Iran Tensions Ahead of Israeli Election
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has denied allegations that he is attempting to escalate military tensions with Iran ahead of the general election. While the opposition accused Netanyahu of putting his personal political interests ahead of national security, the government wing denied the claims.
Hours before the general elections in Israel, allegations that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was attempting to trigger a military escalation with Iran have fueled political debates. Reports brought up by Channel 12, which claimed Netanyahu was experiencing conflict with the military, were firmly denied by the government.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that reports of an attempt to launch an attack against Iran on the eve of the election do not reflect the truth. While Netanyahu's office described the allegations as "fake news," Katz emphasized that Israel has no intention of initiating an action against Iran unless it is attacked.
Reactions from the opposition wing were harsh. Netanyahu's main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, warned the Prime Minister not to put his political interests ahead of state security. Drawing attention to the seriousness of the allegations, Avigdor Lieberman called for a criminal investigation to be launched on suspicion of an attempt to drag Israel into war.
