Activists Demand Halt to AI Development Outside OpenAI Headquarters
Activists in the Bay Area rallied outside OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco to demand a freeze on the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology and the introduction of federal regulations.
Gathering in front of OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco, U.S., activists joined nationwide demonstrations demanding a freeze on artificial intelligence work and meaningful regulations from Congress.
Led by the organization Irreplaceable, the protest took place on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, bringing together about two dozen demonstrators outside OpenAI's office in the Mission Bay neighborhood. Participants held signs reading "We Didn't Vote for Big Tech" and "Water for People, Not Data Centers."
The protests, held across 50 cities and university campuses throughout the U.S., were organized by Irreplaceable, a non-profit coalition established by climate activists, civil rights organizations, and national labor union leaders. The organization aims to give voice to concerns and anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence and to encourage federal-level legislation.
Speaking at the protest, Irreplaceable organizer Jeremy Ornstein stated that the world is about to change, noting that technology is advancing too fast and that even its developers could face critical disasters starting next year that will affect ordinary people.
The organization announced a three-year plan that includes uniting Americans concerned about AI development in 2026, building a shared federal agenda in 2027, and launching a pressure campaign on politicians in 2028, the year of the next presidential election. The organization has not yet shared the details of the laws and regulations it hopes politicians will enact.
