Nato increases Black Sea deployment amid escalating deadly Russian attacks

Following the attack on five more commercial vessels on Tuesday, NATO is deploying additional military assets to the Black Sea, including surveillance, reconnaissance, and forensic support.

The Russian military reported that it struck three cargo ships at Ukraine's Reni port and two other cargo ships heading to Odesa. The targeting of ships carrying grain and agricultural products from Ukrainian ports brought the conflict to NATO borders. The London insurance market designated almost the entirety of the Black Sea as a high-risk status.

NATO Spokesperson Allison Hart announced that ambassadors meeting in the North Atlantic Council discussed security in the Black Sea. In this context, it was announced that more surveillance assets, including maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, drones, and intelligence personnel, will be added to the region. Meanwhile, Romania dispatched fighter jets to shoot down two suspected Russian drones in the region, while Bulgaria requested combat aircraft and anti-tank/drone defense systems from NATO.
