AI Companies Anthropic and OpenAI Head Toward IPOs
Leading artificial intelligence companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are preparing for initial public offerings at high valuations in order to finance costly infrastructure investments.
AI pioneers Anthropic and OpenAI are turning to initial public offering processes to access capital for building massive models and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence. While growing interest stirs markets, concerns regarding a potential AI bubble are also being voiced in the background.
Morningstar Senior Equity Analyst Michael Field stated that these companies are burning cash to win the AI race and that an IPO is the cheapest source of capital, especially in a rising interest rate environment.
While massive sums are involved in the process, concerns over technological control and a potential bubble are resonating in the market. Meanwhile, some companies such as SB Energy, Nscale, and DayOne Data Centers have postponed their IPO plans to December or next year.
Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot, applied for its initial public offering on Wall Street on Monday. Valued at $965 billion, the company's valuation is projected to rise to between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion. The company announced it will trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker "ANT".
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, holds a valuation of $852 billion. CEO Sam Altman had stated that the IPO timeline would be extended due to concerns regarding AI safety. Elon Musk previously filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, and the company has not yet submitted an official registration statement for an IPO to the SEC.
