AI fears are being weaponised

While rapid developments in artificial intelligence lead to pressing issues such as job losses, environmental impacts, and disinformation, it is argued that doomsday scenarios are being instrumentalized to protect the tech monopoly.

The proliferation of artificial intelligence technology brings along social problems such as layoffs, increased energy consumption, carbon footprint, automated disinformation, algorithmic bias, and targeting in warfare. While these complex problems require serious regulation, discussions are overshadowed by doomsday prophecies and existential risk narratives highlighted by figures such as Bernie Sanders, the Vatican, and Hillary Clinton.

Open-source AI models serve as a vital bridge in building local technology ecosystems for the Global South, where development costs from scratch are prohibitive. As seen in Kenya's Social Health Authority (SHA) AI-supported system, imported models can misjudge informal economies, fail in local contexts, and leave citizens facing high costs.

AI monopolization creates data leakage, cognitive dependency, and cycles of centralized control. As a solution, it is stated that bans on open-source models should be avoided, security should be supported, open-source innovation should be defended as a public good, and decentralized development should be ensured.
