AI-generated explicit image in Alabama sparks backlash
After two students at an Alabama high school used artificial intelligence to turn a classmate's social media photo into an explicit image, the family demanded stricter penalties from the school administration.
At Arab High School in Marshall County, Alabama, USA, it was revealed that two male students used artificial intelligence to transform a female student's social media photo into an explicit image.
The incident came to light on October 2 when the school guidance department informed the victimized student's mother, Ashley Neuschwander. Neuschwander stated that her daughter's photo, taken from her social media account, was manipulated with artificial intelligence to turn it into inappropriate content. Following the incident, the school administration gave the two responsible students a five-day suspension.
Mother Neuschwander argued that the punishment given was insufficient and criticized the school administration for a lack of transparency. Stating that they were not informed during the students' return-to-school process, Neuschwander expressed concern that her daughter's reputation had been damaged. Marshall County District Attorney Jennifer Bray stated that she could not provide detailed comments because the matter involves minors, but reminded that under Alabama law, creating or sharing AI-generated explicit images of minors can have serious criminal consequences. Meanwhile, the Arab City Schools administration declined to comment on disciplinary procedures.
