An AI-generated image of Mia Goth shared by a verified fan account with millions of followers on Instagram has reopened the debate on fake content and deepfakes on social media.
Fake Image Shared Through a Verified Account
A fan account opened in the name of Mia Goth and bearing a blue checkmark published an AI-generated image targeting the actress's ex-husband, Shia LaBeouf. The post, which received hundreds of thousands of likes in a short time, was believed to be real due to the account's verified status.
Severe Criticism of Meta from Representatives
Goth's representative, Christine Tripicchio, reacted to the situation by stating that Instagram prioritizes the spread of fake content rather than protecting celebrities' rights. The representative stated that they had previously filed complaints with the platform regarding the same account.
Platforms' Artificial Intelligence Policies
Meta spokesperson Alex Dziedzan stated that following reviews, violating accounts were shut down and impersonation is not permitted. However, it was noted that while platforms like YouTube use advanced similarity detection, Meta does not enforce mandatory AI labeling for static images.
The Deepfake Trend as a General Problem
This incident showed that the rapid spread of artificial intelligence content and deepfake technology on social media platforms has turned into a global problem affecting not only Mia Goth, but many well-known figures such as Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson.
