AI Investments May Be Masking Weaknesses in the US Economy
New research reveals that massive artificial intelligence investments in the US are camouflaging weak spots in other areas of the economy.
Recent analyses by New York Fed economist Julian di Giovanni show that while intensive investments in the artificial intelligence sector maintain their importance for overall growth, they are masking cooling trends and imbalances in other sectors of the economy.
Contribution of Artificial Intelligence to the Economy
It is stated that artificial intelligence investments and infrastructure construction processes make a significant contribution to the US gross domestic product.
It is estimated that approximately one-third of economic growth in recent years stems from artificial intelligence activities.
Imports and Market Share
It is expressed that artificial intelligence-related goods accounted for nearly a quarter of all US imports last year.
Additionally, artificial intelligence-focused stocks represent roughly half of the S&P 500 market value.
Current Account and Savings Balance
New York Federal Reserve economist Julian di Giovanni emphasizes that the increase in artificial intelligence imports over the past two years has not significantly widened trade and current account deficits.
It appears that the expansion in the current account deficit stems from a decline in savings rather than gross investment expenditures.
Sectoral Imbalances and Budget
While IT and software investments are increasing, noticeable declines are observed in areas such as residential investments and factory construction.
It is noted that a significant portion of the increase in the current account deficit since the pandemic has been triggered by government budget deficits.
