AI-generated political ads are showing up on TV screens, experts say they are getting harder to spot

In this election cycle, artificial intelligence technology has started to be used more frequently in political advertisements, and experts state that these contents are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from reality. According to a New York Times report, $147 million was spent on broadcasting advertisements prepared with artificial intelligence.

According to Texas laws, disclosing the use of artificial intelligence in political ads is not mandatory; however, AI and deepfake ads are banned within the last 30 days before the election. Advertisements broadcast this year included an AI-generated voice and image of James Talarico, a fake vacation video of John Cornyn, and a video showing Jasmine Crockett and Cornyn dancing. Journalist and author Al Tompkins stated that AI ads have become popular due to their low cost and the ease of putting opponents in difficult situations.

Tompkins noted that artificial intelligence causes people to view real events with suspicion as well, stating that this situation can lay the groundwork for social cynicism. Experts suggest looking for spelling errors, overly emotional triggers, and reliable sources in order to spot AI content.
