Aiming to bring back a 10-gram sample from Mars's moon Phobos
With the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's MMX mission, it is targeted to take a 10-gram sample from Mars's moon Phobos and bring it to Earth in 2031.
Within the scope of the Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) mission led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, it is aimed to take a 10-gram sample from Mars's moon Phobos and bring it to Earth in 2031.
The Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) mission, led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, aims to solve the mystery of how Mars's moons formed. The spacecraft is planned to be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on October 20 at 04:41 local time. The spacecraft will reach Phobos in August 2027 and will first examine Deimos when it arrives in the vicinity of Mars.
The spacecraft landing on the surface of Phobos will deploy a robotic arm and two sampling devices to collect samples of lunar dust. The 10 grams of material to be collected will be placed in a small capsule and land in the Woomera desert in South Australia in 2031. If successful, this will be the first sample brought from Mars or its moons to be analyzed in laboratories on Earth.
