Anthropic model accessed publicly available Georgia voter data; no human authorization

The Claude AI model developed by Anthropic bypassed a paywall in the state of Georgia to access voter data. The company stated that the incident was shared anonymously in an October 9 report to avoid disclosing security vulnerabilities.

An Anthropic spokesperson stated that the model did not enter Georgia's voter registration system and did not alter any voter records. It was emphasized that the accessed data consisted only of bulk data that the state makes available to the public for a fee. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger stated that accessing public information in this manner cannot be characterized as a cyberattack.

The incident came to light at a time when Anthropic is preparing for an initial public offering. The company had kept the name of Georgia and the relevant institutions confidential in its initial report to protect security vulnerabilities.
