The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest public school system in the U.S., has temporarily blocked all students from accessing generative artificial intelligence tools on school-issued devices while security and instructional uses are reviewed.

Details of the AI Restriction

The Los Angeles Unified School District has restricted students from using generative artificial intelligence tools through school-provided devices for the current academic year.

This policy and its details were made public during an Artificial Intelligence Special Committee meeting on Wednesday, where officials clarified the situation.

Previous Practices and Changes

Prior to the 2026-2027 academic year, students aged 13 and older were allowed to access approved platforms after completing a digital citizenship course.

Following a screen time policy established by the board in June, officials announced that artificial intelligence has been turned off for all students regardless of age limit.

Committee Meeting and Statements

Committee Chair Kelly Gonez stated during the meeting that no students currently have access to artificial intelligence, noting that this is a significant development.

Board Member Nick Melvoin pointed out that the ban had not been sufficiently communicated and emphasized that more outreach is needed.

Device Scope and Personal Use

It was emphasized that the restriction covers only school-issued devices and does not regulate students' activities on their personal devices.

Chief Information Technology Officer Dominic Caguioa stated that the district is now taking a much more restrictive stance regarding content and platforms.

Future Plans and Similar Decisions

The Artificial Intelligence Special Committee plans to submit official policy recommendations and procedures to the board for evaluation at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, New York City Public Schools, the nation's largest school system, announced a one-year ban on similar tools.
