Artificial Intelligence Stock Volatility and Investment Alternatives
Declines in artificial intelligence sector stocks and market fluctuations are directing investors toward exchange-traded funds to reduce risks.
Following the artificial intelligence boom that began with OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, volatility in sector stocks has increased, while exchange-traded funds like the iShares Future AI and Tech ETF stand out as a diversified option. Question marks regarding the sustainability of infrastructure spending have led to declines in shares of companies such as Nvidia, Alphabet, Advanced Micro Devices, Micron Technology, and SanDisk Corp.
Following ChatGPT, which ushered in the AI era by reaching 100 million users in November 2022, stocks in the semiconductor, cloud computing, and software sectors generated high returns. However, investor concerns regarding the sustainability of infrastructure spending have increased volatility. As of the market close on Friday, October 16, Nvidia shares pulled back by 10 percent from their all-time high, Alphabet by 15 percent, Advanced Micro Devices by 18 percent, Micron Technology by 28 percent, and SanDisk Corp by 44 percent.
The iShares Future AI and Tech ETF (ARTY), which investors can consider to limit their exposure to excessive volatility, houses 50 leading artificial intelligence stocks. The fund encompasses companies such as Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Microsoft, Palantir Technologies, Accenture, and Snowflake, providing access to the entire artificial intelligence value chain consisting of infrastructure, software, and services. Restructured in August 2024 to focus exclusively on artificial intelligence, the fund has increased by 130 percent since that date, outperforming the S&P 500 index, and has an expense ratio of 0.47 percent. On the other hand, while concerns regarding the sustainability of the spending boom persist, Anthropic is expected to go public at a valuation of $1.5 trillion instead of the initial expectation of $2 trillion.
