Artificial Intelligence Technologies Boost Global and Local Electricity Demand
While the growth of artificial intelligence drives up electricity demand in data centers, the Mexican sector projects approximately 1.73 GW of capacity by 2031.
The global proliferation of artificial intelligence technologies is increasing electricity demand in data centers while accelerating energy infrastructure planning and new investments in Mexico.
Global Energy Consumption
According to data from the International Energy Agency, data centers consumed approximately 415 TWh of electricity in 2024. This amount corresponds to 2 to 3 percent of global consumption.
Over the last five years, electricity demand has shown an average annual increase of 12 percent.
Mexico's 2031 Targets
The Mexican data center sector projects a need for approximately 1.73 GW of capacity by 2031.
Currently, the sector has 279 MW of installed capacity and 205 MW of capacity under construction.
Infrastructure and Planning Studies
The Federal Electricity Commission and the Mexico Data Center Association have established a roadmap to meet the 1705 MW demand.
Within the scope of the cooperation, project locations, capacities, and operation dates are being reviewed.
