Audi CEO's participation in Trump rally draws backlash in Germany
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner's announcement of a $4 billion investment at a Trump rally in Georgia has sparked debates over political neutrality and ethics in Germany.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner attended a Donald Trump rally in the US state of Georgia to announce a new $4 billion SUV factory investment and plans for 4,500 jobs. This move was sharply criticized by German union leaders and politicians at a time when parent company Volkswagen faces pressure for layoffs and plant closures at home in Germany.
Volkswagen works council chief Daniela Cavallo criticized Döllner for participating in an event where a speech featuring racist and sexist remarks was reportedly delivered. Isabel Cademartori of the Social Democratic Party described the participation as a 'disgrace,' while Christiane Benner of the IG Metall union deemed the situation a violation of the principle of political neutrality and unacceptable behavior.
Audi currently does not own a production facility in the US and faces high import tariffs. While management views this investment as a strategic step to reduce costs, the backlash from labor representatives and political circles in Germany has deepened debates over corporate neutrality and ethical codes.
