Extending the Loeb Scale to the Search for Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence (SETAI)

Astrophysicist Avi Loeb and co-authors Volkan Duran and Omer Eldadi have proposed a new extension to the Loeb Classification Scale within the scope of the Search for Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence (SETAI). The developed framework introduces a four-level SETAI Control Scale, ranging from C0 to C3, to examine the control mechanisms of technological objects.

The new framework proposed by the researchers evaluates three reference control architectures: biological orientation, scripted automation, and adaptive autonomy. While the original Loeb Scale examines the significance level of objects, the new model aims to understand the objects' control mechanisms. The study also outlines four priorities for future SETAI efforts: multi-station observation, continuous monitoring, rendezvous missions, and a strict chain of custody for data security.

In the proposed system, objects such as 1I/‘Oumuamua and 3I/ATLAS are classified at the C0 level, while 2I/Borisov was left at Level 0. The study also envisions examining objects using elements such as an origin flag and evidence profile.
