Barbados Joins Push for Global Panel to Tackle Inequality
Barbados has joined the call to establish an international panel aimed at addressing inequalities driven by rising geopolitical tensions, the climate crisis, and developments such as artificial intelligence.
Barbados has joined the ranks of countries supporting the creation of an international panel to combat global challenges that are deepening the divide between rich and poor nations.
Global Inequality and the Call
Barbados has joined a group of countries demanding the establishment of an international panel at a time when geopolitical tensions, climate change, and rapid technological advancements are deepening the gap between rich and poor nations.
Politicians from developing economies are voicing concerns over mounting debt burdens, rising food and fuel costs, and the risk of being left out of the artificial intelligence investment boom.
Statements from Leaders
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley stated at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok that combating inequality is fundamental to ending poverty and creating job opportunities.
Mottley emphasized that the climate crisis and the rise of artificial intelligence have made this task much more urgent for humanity.
United Nations Goal
The group aims to reach a resolution with the United Nations General Assembly before next summer for the official establishment of the panel.
Countries supporting this plan include Spain, Brazil, South Africa, Norway, Germany, Mexico, Iceland, Japan, and Bangladesh.
International Support and Warnings
Norwegian International Development Minister Asmund Aukrust stated at a meeting in Bangkok that more countries are expected to commit their support.
Meanwhile, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva warned that current economic developments and rapid progress in artificial intelligence carry the danger of deepening the divide between advanced and developing economies.
