Brazil cancels passports: Flávio Bolsonaro's whereabouts are unclear
Uncertainty persists regarding the whereabouts of Flávio Bolsonaro after his passports were cancelled following his election defeat in Brazil.
While the passports of Flávio Bolsonaro were cancelled after he failed to comply with the Brazilian Supreme Court's decision to surrender his passports following an inspection, Argentine authorities reported that Bolsonaro and his family flew to Ecuador.
Conflicting information is emerging regarding the whereabouts of Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost the presidential election in Brazil to his left-wing rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Argentine immigration authorities stated that Bolsonaro, along with his wife and two daughters, crossed the country's land border and boarded a private plane heading towards the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador. While flight data shows that an aircraft belonging to Baires Fly S.A. headed toward Miami, Florida after a Guayaquil stop, it remains unclear whether the Bolsonaro family was on board.
The Brazilian Supreme Court had given Bolsonaro a 24-hour deadline to surrender his passports as part of an investigation into money laundering allegations. After the deadline expired, authorities cancelled the documents, while his lawyers stated they had no information regarding Bolsonaro's whereabouts. Due to the Mercosur agreement allowing travel between the two countries with only an identity card, border crossing remains possible even if the passports are cancelled.
