California to Vote on 5 Percent Wealth Tax Proposal for Billionaires
California voters are preparing to vote on Proposition 40, which proposes a one-time 5 percent tax on the net wealth of billionaires in the state. The regulation, aimed at funding healthcare services, has caused divisions among the state's wealthy and politicians.
Proposition 40, brought to the agenda in California, aims to levy a one-time 5 percent tax on the net assets of billionaires living in the state. Designed to cover financial deficits that may occur in the healthcare system due to federal budget cuts, the regulation is planned to generate $100 billion in revenue.
Figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang support the proposal to address income inequality and ensure ultra-wealthy individuals contribute to public services. In contrast, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Google co-founder Sergey Brin harbor concerns that the tax could drive high-income individuals away from the state and reduce overall tax revenues.
For the regulation to take effect, the approval of a majority of voters is required. Current polls show that voters are divided on the matter. Meanwhile, it is reported that some billionaires, such as Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Peter Thiel, Travis Kalanick, and Don Hankey, have left the state over the possibility of the tax implementation.
